Union Syndicale: A Union of Values

Un syndicat, des valeur

A trade union unites workers in the defence of their shared professional interests: salaries, pensions, social security, careers, stable employment, work/life balance and working environment to name just a few examples.

Union Syndicale represents staff working for all Brussels-based European institutions and organisations. We are a member of Union Syndicale Federal, which represents the women and men of the entire European Civil Service, wherever they work. Through our affiliation to the European Trade Union Conference, we are fully involved in the European world of labour.

An organisation that is responsible, credible and respected, Union Syndicale is recognised for its trade union values :

  • Solidarity among all members of staff;
  • Fairness and social justice;
  • Integrity;
  • Respect for others and for our social partners.

Union Syndicale defends the interests of all staff without regard to nationality, religious beliefs, political opinions, staff category or status. We act:

  • Individually, through advice and support, including legal support;
  • Collectively, through negotiating and organising collective action.

Both effective and competent, Union Syndicale:

  • Seeks constructive dialogue;
  • Analyses the options and puts forward proposals;
  • Is well prepared, often better prepared than its counterparts;
  • Steers the negotiations towards realistic goals with commitment and determination;
  • Organises whatever collective action, including work stoppages, any failure of dialogue may make necessary; and
  • Ensures that agreements are respected.

In the Brussels Local Staff Committee, Union Syndicale always plays an active and constructive role, whether in the majority or not. We work to ensure that the Staff Regulations are applied properly and staff’s interests served.

Whether at the negotiating table or in the Staff Committee, Union Syndicale remains true to its trade union values of solidarity, justice, integrity and honesty.
